St. Enoder

St Enoder is a civil parish and hamlet in central Cornwall, located southeast of Newquay. The parish sits just south of St Columb Major, with which it shares historical ties. The historic churchtown village of St Enoder is largely gone, and the present parish is centered on the larger settlements of Fraddon, Indian Queens, St Columb Road, and Summercourt. The area is crossed by major trunk roads, including the A30, A3058, and A39, giving it a sense of being at an important juncture in central Cornwall. The landscape is a mix of farmland, former mining sites, and residential development.

History: St Enoder was first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Heglosenuder, Cornish for the church of Enoder, a male saint whose feast day was held on the Sunday nearest to the last Thursday in April. The church and manor of St Enoder belonged in Anglo-Saxon times to the monks of Bodmin and were held before 1066 by Godric. In 1086, they were held by Robert, Count of Mortain. At a later date, St Enoder fell into lay hands and around 1268 was given to Glasney College. The benefice was appropriated to Glasney College in 1270, and the cure of souls became a vicarage. The present extent of the parish dates only to 1981, when a boundary review merged the historic parish with part of St Columb Parish, including Indian Queens and St Columb Road. The parish has been occupied for many thousands of years, with prehistoric monuments including settlement enclosures and burial mounds found during the construction of the Indian Queens/Fraddon bypass. An early memorial stone, formerly a boundary stone between St Enoder and St Columb Major, was moved to the churchyard in 1939. Today, St Enoder is a residential and commuter parish on the northern fringes of the China Clay Area, with a population of over 4,500.
