St Stephens by Launceston is a civil parish immediately south of Launceston, historically known for its role as an ecclesiastical centre and for the medieval borough of Newport. The parish includes the hamlets of Tregadillett and Landlake, and the landscape is a mix of pasture, woodland, and former parkland. The area has a layered, historic quality, shaped by its proximity to Launceston and its long association with religious and manorial estates.

History: St Stephens was founded as a priory and parish by the Augustinian canons of Launceston in the 12th century. The priory church, St Stephen's, served as a religious and administrative centre until the Dissolution of the Monasteries, after which it became the parish church. The parish also included the medieval borough of Newport, which held a charter and sent members to Parliament. Newport declined after its incorporation into Launceston in the 17th century, and little remains of the borough today. The parish's economy was historically agricultural, with the priory holding significant lands and tenancies. After the Dissolution, the lands passed into private hands, including the Drake family, who held estates in nearby Werrington. The 19th century saw modest agricultural development, and the parish retained its rural character. In the 20th century, St Stephens became effectively a suburb of Launceston, with residential growth and industrial development along the main roads. Today, the parish functions as a mixed residential and agricultural area, with the church retaining its historic significance.
