Bodinnick is a waterside hamlet clinging to the eastern bank of the River Fowey estuary, directly opposite the town of Fowey. It consists of a tight cluster of cottages, a historic ferry landing, and steep lanes rising into wooded slopes. The hamlet is shaped by its relationship with the river: the ferry, the quay, and the views across to Fowey define its character. It has a quiet, almost secretive atmosphere, despite being only a ferry ride from the bustle of Fowey. History: Bodinnick's history is inseparable from the Fowey estuary's role as a maritime corridor. The name may derive from Cornish words meaning "house of the monk," suggesting an early religious presence. The hamlet was historically a crossing point, with the Bodinnick Ferry operating since at least the 14th century, connecting the eastern and western banks of the estuary. In medieval times, Bodinnick was part of the manor of Fowey, and its residents were involved in fishing, boat-building, and pilotage. The writer Daphne du Maurier lived at Ferryside, a house on the waterfront, from 1926 to 1943, and her novel "Rebecca" was partly written there. The hamlet's steep topography limited expansion, and it remained small and tightly knit. The 20th century brought residential conversion and an influx of second homes, but the ferry remains in operation, and Bodinnick retains its essential character as a working waterside community.

The village

Harbour, heritage and a living village

Charlestown is a preserved Georgian harbour on St Austell Bay, built around the trade in copper and china clay. Its granite quays, old warehouses and close-set cottages still give the village a strong sense of place.

Today the harbour is both a historic setting and a real visitor destination: a place for maritime stories, food, a slow wander and a route towards the beaches and coast path beyond.
