Village profile
Overview
Breage is a village in west Cornwall, located three miles west of Helston. Named after Saint Breaca, an Irish missionary said to have arrived in the 5th century, the village has a history rooted in early medieval religious settlement and centuries of tin and copper mining. The surrounding area includes Praa Sands and a landscape shaped by former mine workings, with the village itself retaining a quiet, traditional character. The parish is known for its fine 15th-century church and well-preserved medieval wall paintings.
History: Breage was recorded in the Domesday Book as part of the manor of Binnerton, with land for 60 ploughs, 32 villagers, and 25 smallholders. The area has been settled since the early medieval period, with the church dedicated to St Breaca in 1456, replacing an earlier 13th-century structure. The church contains five medieval wall paintings on the north wall, including a large depiction of St Christopher and a rare Warning to the Sabbath Breakers. A Roman milestone of the 3rd century is preserved in the church, suggesting a nearby Roman road. The churchyard contains an unusual Hiberno-Saxon cross head. The parish was historically a center of tin and copper mining, with captains' houses built in the village and mine workings scattered across the area. The mines declined in the late 19th century, and today most residents are commuters, working in Helston, RNAS Culdrose, Penzance, or Falmouth. The name is traditionally pronounced "Breeg" or "Braig."
