A waterside village and former fishing port, sitting on the shores of the Millbrook Lake inlet. Boating, maritime heritage, and village life centered on the water define this place. History: Millbrook takes its name from the mills that once stood on the stream feeding Millbrook Lake. The village developed as a fishing settlement and boat-building center, with quays and yards along the waterfront. In the 19th century, Millbrook had a substantial fishing fleet and a reputation for boat-building. The village also served as a minor port, with vessels loading limestone, slate, and farm produce for export to Plymouth and beyond. In 1933, Millbrook gained naval connections when HMS Raleigh, the Royal Navy's training establishment, was built nearby. The presence of the base brought employment and boosted the local economy. Millbrook grew in the 20th century, becoming a residential village for naval personnel, dockyard workers, and commuters to Plymouth. The village retains its waterside character, with boats moored in the lake, pubs and shops serving the local community, and an active sailing club. Millbrook is also the gateway to the Rame Peninsula, with fine coastal walks and beaches nearby.

The village

Harbour, heritage and a living village

Charlestown is a preserved Georgian harbour on St Austell Bay, built around the trade in copper and china clay. Its granite quays, old warehouses and close-set cottages still give the village a strong sense of place.

Today the harbour is both a historic setting and a real visitor destination: a place for maritime stories, food, a slow wander and a route towards the beaches and coast path beyond.
