Boscastle at a glance

A north coast harbour shaped by the Valency and the Atlantic

Boscastle sits in a deep valley on Cornwall’s north coast. The River Valency runs through the village before reaching a narrow, cliff walled harbour that opens to the sea.

The harbour and surrounding land are cared for by the National Trust. Visitor facilities, the harbour shops and cliff paths sit close together, so a few hours can cover the waterfront, village and a short coast path stretch.

Boscastle is also remembered for the flash flood of 16 August 2004, when extreme rainfall in the Valency catchment overwhelmed the village. Flood defence and harbour works followed; treat the valley as a place that still responds quickly to heavy rain.
