The defining landmark
Boscastle’s harbour occupies a natural inlet where the Valency reaches the sea between steep cliffs. Quays and breakwaters make a sheltered space for small boats while leaving the mouth exposed to Atlantic weather.
On 16 August 2004, intense rainfall caused catastrophic flooding along the Valency. The National Trust and partners later rebuilt harbour and visitor infrastructure; check current access during storms or very high seas.
Walk from the harbour
Walk the harbour quays, then use the National Trust visitor area before climbing back toward the village.
Take a short out-and-back on the cliffs for views into the inlet; turn back early in wind or poor visibility.
Follow a gentle stretch upstream only when paths are dry; the valley can rise quickly after rain.
