Know before you go
Carn Brea (Karnbre in Cornish) is both a hilltop and a civil parish in west Cornwall. The hill lies about a mile south-west of Redruth. The parish had 8,013 residents at the 2011 census and includes Brea, Carnkie, Pool, Tuckingmill, Illogan Highway, Treskillard and other settlements between Camborne and Redruth.
The hill has been important for thousands of years. It was the site of a Neolithic tor enclosure, occupied from about 3700 to 3400 BC, and excavated by Roger Mercer in 1970 and 1972. Traces of fourteen platforms for long houses were found, with pottery, flint tools and over 700 flint arrowheads. The site was reoccupied in the Iron Age, and minerals were mined from the hillside.
Carn Brea Castle stands near the top, on the site of a chapel recorded from 1379 and probably dedicated to St Michael. The Basset family built the present castle in the 18th century as a hunting lodge, and it is considered a folly. It was converted into a restaurant in the 1980s. At the highest point is a 90 foot Celtic cross, put up by public subscription in 1836 in memory of Francis Basset, 1st Baron de Dunstanville and Basset, a mine owner.
A little planning goes a long way
Two properties can look close on a map and still involve a very different journey. Ask about the whole stay, from unloading your bags to getting back after an evening out.
Find places to eat in Carn BreaAsk whether parking is on site, reserved elsewhere or in a public car park. Confirm unloading arrangements and the walk with luggage.
Ask the host about the route from the street to your room, lift access, bathroom layout and any steps inside. A central address or harbour view does not tell you whether a property suits your mobility needs.
Confirm the room layout, cot or extra bed arrangements and any dog restrictions directly. For cottages, check outside space and where you can unload. Do not assume a whole property, parking or pet permission is included.
