Lat 50.3320° N, lon 4.7570° W●Georgian harbour village · St Austell Bay
A remarkably complete Georgian harbour village shaped by copper, china clay and the sea. Charlestown combines tall ships, granite quays, maritime stories, filming locations and coast path views.
Charlestown at a glance
Charlestown developed from the small fishing settlement of West Polmear after Charles Rashleigh began building the harbour in the 1790s. The new port served the copper and china clay industries, with granite quays, dock gates and warehouses forming the working landscape visitors see today.
Tall ships and unusually complete harbour architecture later made the village a natural filming location. Poldark is the best known association, but the harbour’s appeal is broader: maritime history, sheltered views, local food and direct access to the South West Coast Path.
A first visit can comfortably combine the quays, museum, lunch, beach and a short coast path section. Longer stays connect Charlestown with Carlyon Bay, Duporth and the wider St Austell coast.

Harbour & coast
The harbour was engineered for industry, but its compact form now makes the village’s history unusually easy to read on foot.
The defining landmark
Charles Rashleigh’s late-eighteenth-century harbour transformed a small fishing place into a port for copper and china clay. The basin, granite piers, lock gates, warehouses and associated village survive as an exceptionally coherent historic group.
Tall ships reinforce the maritime atmosphere, while filming has introduced the harbour to audiences around the world. It remains a real place with residents and working areas, so explore slowly and respect harbour controls.
Walk from the harbour
Explore the upper village, inner harbour, quays and accessible viewpoints before returning the same way.
Climb from the harbour for wider bay views, choosing a turnaround point that suits conditions.
Follow the coast towards Duporth and Black Head only with suitable footwear, weather and daylight.
One day itinerary
Use the classic harbour plan, then switch it for rain, children or lower mobility.
