Know before you go
Harlyn is a small village on the north coast of Cornwall, just inland from Harlyn Bay. It lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, about three miles from Padstow. St Merryn is about a mile away.
Harlyn Bay is a wide, sandy bay backed by low cliffs and dunes. It is popular with families and surf schools and is suitable for novice surfers. RNLI lifeguards patrol in the main season, and there is a large car park at beach level. The Hellyar family has owned the bay and the farm around it since 1800.
The area has a long past. Gold lunulae, probably from the early Bronze Age, were found here in 1865. In 2014 storms uncovered a stone burial cist with human remains, thought to date from the Bronze or Iron Age, and several prehistoric burial mounds lie nearby.

A little planning goes a long way
Two properties can look close on a map and still involve a very different journey. Ask about the whole stay, from unloading your bags to getting back after an evening out.
Find places to eat in HarlynParking in Harlyn: Large car park at beach level. Ask whether parking is on site, reserved elsewhere or in a public car park, and confirm unloading arrangements and the walk with luggage.
Ask the host about the route from the street to your room, lift access, bathroom layout and any steps inside. A central address or harbour view does not tell you whether a property suits your mobility needs.
Confirm the room layout, cot or extra bed arrangements and any dog restrictions directly. For cottages, check outside space and where you can unload. Do not assume a whole property, parking or pet permission is included.
Useful things to know
Yes. RNLI lifeguards patrol Harlyn Beach from 10am to 6pm. Cover runs daily through the main season from early May to late September, with extra days around Easter and in October. Always swim between the red and yellow flags.
Harlyn is described as suitable for novice surfers and is popular with surf schools. The RNLI warns that a steep shelf at high tide creates a shore break, where waves break close to the beach. Take care at high tide, especially with children.
Harlyn Bay is not on Cornwall Council's list of beaches with seasonal dog bans. The beach is privately owned, and the council notes that private beaches may set their own rules. Check the signs at the car park before you go on the sand.
Harlyn Sands Holiday Park is on Lighthouse Road, Trevose Head, overlooking Harlyn Bay. It is about 300 yards from a sandy beach and about 3 miles from Padstow. Constantine Bay and Booby's Bay are a short walk away.
The Harlyn is a pub on Harlyn Bay Road, built on the site of the old Harlyn Inn. It serves lunch and evening meals and has live music in the summer. It is close to bus stops.
