Know before you go
Holmbush is a village in the suburban area of St Austell, in the civil parish of St Austell. It lies either side of the A390 and shares the PL25 postcode district with the rest of the town.
In the 18th and 19th centuries Holmbush was a centre of tin and copper mining. Charlestown United Mines was based here and produced large amounts of tin and copper in the early 19th century, using engine house shafts, whim shafts, stamps, water wheels and steam engines. The ore was carried to Charlestown for export. In 1838 the mine employed 814 people, made up of 431 men, 120 women and 263 children. It later became part of Charlestown United and Cuddra Consolidated Mines.
The shape of the village has changed over time. In the 1880s most people lived south of the A390, between the road and the railway to St Austell. Housing and an industrial estate were built north of the road in the 1970s. The Wheal Eliza cricket ground was built in 1973 on part of the old West Wheal Eliza mine site, and in 1982 it first hosted a Minor Counties Championship match, when Cornwall played Dorset.

A little planning goes a long way
Two properties can look close on a map and still involve a very different journey. Ask about the whole stay, from unloading your bags to getting back after an evening out.
Find places to eat in HolmbushAsk whether parking is on site, reserved elsewhere or in a public car park. Confirm unloading arrangements and the walk with luggage.
Ask the host about the route from the street to your room, lift access, bathroom layout and any steps inside. A central address or harbour view does not tell you whether a property suits your mobility needs.
Confirm the room layout, cot or extra bed arrangements and any dog restrictions directly. For cottages, check outside space and where you can unload. Do not assume a whole property, parking or pet permission is included.
