Know before you go
Kenwyn (Keynwynn in Cornish) is a settlement and civil parish in Cornwall. The settlement sits just north of Truro, between the River Allen and the River Kenwyn, and is now a suburb of Truro within Truro civil parish. The civil parish of Kenwyn leaves out the settlement and covers rural areas to the west and north west of Truro.
The main villages in the parish are Threemilestone and Shortlanesend, and its hamlets include Allet, Greenbottom and Idless. The 2021 census recorded a population of 7,198. Kenwyn was an ancient parish in the Powder Hundred, and the Local Government Act 1894 split it into Kenwyn Urban, inside Truro, and Kenwyn Rural. Kenwyn Urban was merged into Truro in 1934.
The earliest recorded form of the name is Keynwen, from 1259, from Cornish words meaning ridge and white. In the 12th century the lord of the manor founded the borough of Truro on part of it. The Domesday Book lists the manor as Tregavran, and several families held it over the centuries.
A little planning goes a long way
Two properties can look close on a map and still involve a very different journey. Ask about the whole stay, from unloading your bags to getting back after an evening out.
Find places to eat in KenwynAsk whether parking is on site, reserved elsewhere or in a public car park. Confirm unloading arrangements and the walk with luggage.
Ask the host about the route from the street to your room, lift access, bathroom layout and any steps inside. A central address or harbour view does not tell you whether a property suits your mobility needs.
Confirm the room layout, cot or extra bed arrangements and any dog restrictions directly. For cottages, check outside space and where you can unload. Do not assume a whole property, parking or pet permission is included.
