Kilkhampton and Stratton: two old north Cornwall settlements near Bude

This guide covers two neighbouring places near Bude, in the north east of Cornwall. Kilkhampton is a village and civil parish on the A39, about four miles north north east of Bude. Stratton is an old town in the parish of Bude-Stratton, close to Bude itself. Both share the EX23 postcode district.

Kilkhampton (Kylgh in Cornish, meaning circle) appears in the Domesday Book as Chilchetone. The village has a post office, a primary school, the Grenville Rooms community centre, three general stores and two pubs. Its church of St James the Great dates from the 12th century, with a Norman south doorway, a tall buttressed Perpendicular tower with eight bells and an extensive set of 16th century benches. A monument to Sir Bevill Grenville, erected in 1711, stands on the south wall of the Grenville Chapel.

Penstowe Castle, a late Norman motte and bailey, lies about 500 metres west of Kilkhampton. Stowe House, the mansion of John Granville, 1st Earl of Bath, was built in 1680 and demolished in 1739, and some of its stonework was reused at Penstowe. Cornish wrestling tournaments with prizes were held in the village in the 1800s.

A little planning goes a long way

Before you book your Kilkhampton stay

Two properties can look close on a map and still involve a very different journey. Ask about the whole stay, from unloading your bags to getting back after an evening out.

Find places to eat in Kilkhampton

Parking and arrival

Ask whether parking is on site, reserved elsewhere or in a public car park. Confirm unloading arrangements and the walk with luggage.

Hills, steps and access

Ask the host about the route from the street to your room, lift access, bathroom layout and any steps inside. A central address or harbour view does not tell you whether a property suits your mobility needs.

Families and dogs

Confirm the room layout, cot or extra bed arrangements and any dog restrictions directly. For cottages, check outside space and where you can unload. Do not assume a whole property, parking or pet permission is included.
