Know before you go

Old Town: the old harbour village of St Mary's, with a bay, a ruined castle and a churchyard

Old Town (Treveglos, meaning church town, in Cornish) is a village on St Mary's in the Isles of Scilly, south east of Hugh Town. It is thought to be the island's oldest settlement. In medieval times it was the main harbour, administrative centre and settlement, when the island was known as Ennor and the village as Porth Ennor. It declined as the Garrison and Hugh Town developed and took over as the islands' main hub.

Old Town Bay (Porth Treveglos) is a natural harbour linking the village to the open sea. It has an old quay and a slipway that is still in use.

Ennor Castle is a fragmentary shell keep on a small knoll, dating from the 13th or 14th century. It is the only medieval castle in the islands. It became redundant after Star Castle was built on the Garrison in the late 16th century, and some of its stone went into Star Castle while much of the rest was reused in Old Town buildings. Overgrowth was cleared in 2014, making the castle much more visible.

A little planning goes a long way

Before you book your Old Town stay

Two properties can look close on a map and still involve a very different journey. Ask about the whole stay, from unloading your bags to getting back after an evening out.

Find places to eat in Old Town

Parking and arrival

Ask whether parking is on site, reserved elsewhere or in a public car park. Confirm unloading arrangements and the walk with luggage.

Hills, steps and access

Ask the host about the route from the street to your room, lift access, bathroom layout and any steps inside. A central address or harbour view does not tell you whether a property suits your mobility needs.

Families and dogs

Confirm the room layout, cot or extra bed arrangements and any dog restrictions directly. For cottages, check outside space and where you can unload. Do not assume a whole property, parking or pet permission is included.
