Perranarworthal: the village with the Perran Foundry, between Falmouth and Truro

Perranarworthal is a village and civil parish about four miles north-west of Falmouth and five miles south-west of Truro. At the 2011 census the parish had 1,496 residents. It includes Perran Wharf, beside the River Kennall, and Perranwell, which has a station on the Maritime Line. The parish borders Restronguet Creek on its eastern side.

The name comes from the Manor of Arworthal, which was recorded as Hareworthal in 1187. Eighteenth-century maps show Perran Arworthal, which refers to St Piran's by the creek or estuary.

Perran Wharf grew around the Perran Iron Foundry, set up in 1791 on the site of a tin smelting works. It was run by the Fox family of Falmouth and other Quaker business families, and at its peak it employed more than 400 men. The creek silted up, Cornish mining declined, and the foundry closed in March 1879. The site was later used for milling, animal feed storage and cloth dyeing, and closed in 1986. The first new homes on the site were completed in 2013.

A little planning goes a long way

Before you book your Perranarworthal stay

Two properties can look close on a map and still involve a very different journey. Ask about the whole stay, from unloading your bags to getting back after an evening out.

Parking and arrival

Ask whether parking is on site, reserved elsewhere or in a public car park. Confirm unloading arrangements and the walk with luggage.

Hills, steps and access

Ask the host about the route from the street to your room, lift access, bathroom layout and any steps inside. A central address or harbour view does not tell you whether a property suits your mobility needs.

Families and dogs

Confirm the room layout, cot or extra bed arrangements and any dog restrictions directly. For cottages, check outside space and where you can unload. Do not assume a whole property, parking or pet permission is included.
