Park in Coverack, then walk south

North Corner is the sensible first stop as you drop into Coverack (TR12 6TF). It is the larger village car park, honesty box, coins useful, with toilets close by. The smaller Dolor Point car park (TR12 6TQ) sits at the far end of the village past the harbour. It is closer to the start of the walk south, but it fills early and the lane is tight. If the full signs are out, turn round at North Corner rather than hoping for a space at the cove. There is not one.

From the harbour end, follow the coast path south toward Chynhalls Point. The walk is about 1.5 km and mostly easy, with seats on the way. Just beyond the point a short path drops to the beach. That last bit is the awkward one: steep, sometimes overgrown, not a route for buggies or anyone who needs a firm surface. After storms the cove can look stony until the sand comes back.

The cove looks south. Northerly and north westerly winds blow off the land and usually leave the water quieter, which is what you want for a swim. A south or easterly puts more chop in. A strong easterly can make this whole east Lizard shore feel exposed. It is not a surf beach, and hidden rocks make bodyboarding a poor idea. Local advice is to swim on a rising tide when the sea looks settled. Nobody is watching from the cliffs.

Sea temperature on this stretch is typically around 10°C in midwinter, then 15 to 18°C on a normal late summer day, sometimes a little warmer after a settled spell. The live panel at the top of this page shows the marine forecast reading. A wetsuit still makes sense for most people outside the hottest weeks. After heavy rain, give it a day or two. Porthbeer itself is not an Environment Agency bathing water, so there is no official sample here. Coverack village beach is the nearest designated shore if you want a nearby reading.

Dogs are welcome year round on this cove. It is not on the Cornwall Council seasonal ban list. Keep them under control, clean up, and still read the signs in case a local notice has gone up. Bring water, food and a bag for litter. The nearest cafés, pub and toilets are back in Coverack.
