A purpose built Georgian port that still feels connected to the sea

Charlestown developed from the small fishing settlement of West Polmear after Charles Rashleigh began building the harbour in the 1790s. The new port served the copper and china clay industries, with granite quays, dock gates and warehouses forming the working landscape visitors see today.

Tall ships and unusually complete harbour architecture later made the village a natural filming location. Poldark is the best known association, but the harbour’s appeal is broader: maritime history, sheltered views, local food and direct access to the South West Coast Path.

A first visit can comfortably combine the quays, museum, lunch, beach and a short coast path section. Longer stays connect Charlestown with Carlyon Bay, Duporth and the wider St Austell coast.
