Charles Rashleigh’s late-eighteenth-century harbour transformed a small fishing place into a port for copper and china clay. The basin, granite piers, lock gates, warehouses and associated village survive as an exceptionally coherent historic group.
Tall ships reinforce the maritime atmosphere, while filming has introduced the harbour to audiences around the world. It remains a real place with residents and working areas, so explore slowly and respect harbour controls.
