About Porth Hellick Down Burial Chamber

Porth Hellick Down Burial Chamber is the largest of six prehistoric burial mounds above Porth Hellick bay on eastern St Mary’s. This Scillonian entrance grave from about 2000 BC sits within a mound about 12 metres across, retained by large slabs. An open passage leads into a D shaped chamber about 3.5 metres long and a metre high, roofed with four capstones. Excavated in 1899, the site is free to visit in daylight, cared for by English Heritage. Expect steep slopes and uneven surfaces; shops, cafés and toilets are in Hugh Town.
