About PK Porthcurno

PK Porthcurno is a museum of global communications in the valley behind Porthcurno beach, near Land's End. In June 1870 the final section of the first submarine telegraph cable linking Britain and India came ashore here, and Porthcurno went on to become a key hub for international cable communications, with a training college for the industry until 1993. The museum, which opened in 1998, tells the story of how the world became connected, from early electricity and Morse code through to fibre optics, with hands on exhibits, changing exhibitions and family events through the year. During the Second World War miners cut tunnels into the granite hillside to protect the telegraph equipment, part of the history told here. It suits families, curious adults and anyone interested in science or wartime history, and it is a good choice on a wet day. From April to October it opens daily from 10am to 5pm, and in winter on Mondays, Saturdays and Sundays. With Gift Aid, a ticket gives free return visits for a year. Pay on exit car parks serve the museum and beach, and there is a café.
