Millbrook: a village at the head of a tidal creek on the Rame Peninsula, home of the Black Prince Parade
Millbrook, Govermelin in Cornish, is a village and parish on the Rame Peninsula in south east Cornwall, about four miles south of Saltash. It sits at the head of a tidal creek that flows into the Tamar, which forms the Hamoaze and widens into Plymouth Sound, with the city of Plymouth across the water. Surrounded by hills and farmland, it is one of the largest villages in Cornwall, with over 2,200 people at the 2011 census, and well over nine in ten residents live here all year round.
There has been a community here for centuries, and Millbrook men are said to have fought at Crécy and Calais. The parish itself was created from part of Maker parish in 1869, and its old borough seal showed a mill with a waterwheel in a stream, a nod to the name. Over the years the village has lived by fishing, brick making, milling and leather tanning, and a gunpowder works here blew up spectacularly in 1865.
The creek is still a working waterway, with a marina, moorings, yacht repairs and boat building using both traditional and modern skills. In 2008 the sailor Pete Goss built the 37 foot Cornish lugger Spirit of Mystery at Innsworke Mill Boat Yard, a replica of a boat that sailed to Australia in 1854 and 1855. The creek in the village has been dammed since 1977 to prevent flooding, and the lake behind the dam, with its pool and wetlands, is a good spot for birdwatching and the centre of the village recreation area, with a skatepark and children's play park nearby.
