About Clay Trails

The Clay Trails are a network of traffic free trails for cycling and walking through the china clay country north of St Austell, part funded by the charity Sustrans. They cross a landscape shaped by centuries of clay quarrying, with disused pits, flooded quarries and the white pyramid of an old clay tip. The main routes link the Eden Project with Wheal Martyn china clay museum, St Austell with Wheal Martyn along the old Lansalson branch line through the Trenance valley, Bugle with the Eden Project, and the Eden Project with Par beach via St Blazey. The Eden to Wheal Martyn route crosses the William Cookworthy bridge and includes a short Sky Spur section. Because the trails connect visitor attractions, they make a good car free way to reach Eden or to combine a ride with a museum visit. It suits families on bikes, walkers and anyone exploring the St Austell area.
