Lat 50.6905° N, lon 4.6861° W●Harbour village · River Valency · North Cornwall
A steep harbour village where the River Valency meets the Atlantic through a narrow rock inlet. Boscastle combines working quays, National Trust harbour land, cliff walks and a compact high street.
Boscastle at a glance
Boscastle sits in a deep valley on Cornwall’s north coast. The River Valency runs through the village before reaching a narrow, cliff walled harbour that opens to the sea.
The harbour and surrounding land are cared for by the National Trust. Visitor facilities, the harbour shops and cliff paths sit close together, so a few hours can cover the waterfront, village and a short coast path stretch.
Boscastle is also remembered for the flash flood of 16 August 2004, when extreme rainfall in the Valency catchment overwhelmed the village. Flood defence and harbour works followed; treat the valley as a place that still responds quickly to heavy rain.
Must visit spots
Begin at the harbour mouth and National Trust visitor centre, then choose the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic, the Cobweb Inn, pottery and farm shop stops, the Valency valley paths, or a cliff stretch toward Tintagel or Crackington.

Harbour & valley
The harbour is the reason to visit, but the Valency valley and cliff paths explain how the place works.
The defining landmark
Boscastle’s harbour occupies a natural inlet where the Valency reaches the sea between steep cliffs. Quays and breakwaters make a sheltered space for small boats while leaving the mouth exposed to Atlantic weather.
On 16 August 2004, intense rainfall caused catastrophic flooding along the Valency. The National Trust and partners later rebuilt harbour and visitor infrastructure; check current access during storms or very high seas.
Walk from the harbour
Walk the harbour quays, then use the National Trust visitor area before climbing back toward the village.
Take a short out-and-back on the cliffs for views into the inlet; turn back early in wind or poor visibility.
Follow a gentle stretch upstream only when paths are dry; the valley can rise quickly after rain.
One day itinerary
Use the classic plan as a guide, then switch it for rain, children or shorter distances. Tintagel Castle stays a separate ticketed visit.
