About Penhallam Manor

Penhallam Manor, between Jacobstow and Week St Mary, is the excavated ground plan of a moated medieval manor house in a sheltered wooded valley. The de Cardinham family built a large house here between the 1180s and the 1230s, with ranges around a courtyard and a moat. By 1428 the manor had ended. Excavations between 1968 and 1973 uncovered the low, grass covered foundations you see today. English Heritage looks after the site and entry is free.
