Marhamchurch

Marhamchurch is a ridgetop village south of Bude, characterised by its Grade I listed church, rolling farmland, and proximity to the coast. The village has a quiet, open quality, shaped by agriculture and its position on the old Bude Canal route. The landscape is a mix of hedged fields, wooded valleys, and coastal cliffs, with Widemouth Bay to the west. Marhamchurch retains a sense of being off the main thoroughfares.

History: Marhamchurch is named after St Marwenne, a 5th-century missionary and daughter of the Welsh saint Brychan, who is believed to have established a hermitage here. The village was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as a manor held by the Count of Mortain. The church, dedicated to St Marwenne, dates from the 14th century, with a 15th-century aisle and porch. In the early 15th century, an anchoress named Cecilia Moys lived in a cell attached to the church, a rare example of female anchoritic life in Cornwall. The village's economy was historically agricultural, supplemented by coastal fishing and kelp harvesting. The construction of the Bude Canal, completed in 1825, brought the village into the canal network, with an inclined plane near Marhamchurch used to raise boats between levels. This infrastructure briefly boosted the local economy, but the arrival of the railway in the late 19th century made the canal redundant. Marhamchurch remained primarily agricultural through the 20th century, with modest residential growth. Today, the village functions as a small rural community, with the church and village hall serving as focal points.
