About Chysauster Ancient Village

Chysauster is one of the best preserved ancient villages in Cornwall, set on an exposed hillside above Newmill, about six miles from Penzance. Looked after by English Heritage, it was a settlement of the Roman British period, and you can walk along the line of the original village street past the stone walled remains of nine courtyard houses, each with rooms arranged around an open central yard. An elevated viewing platform gives an overview of the layout, a site model helps you picture the houses as they were, and there is also a fogou, an underground passage of a type found in far west Cornwall. In spring the site is known for bluebells and wildlife. It suits anyone interested in prehistory and families happy with a walk, as there is plenty of room to explore. Entry is free and the site is open daily. The car park is about half a mile from the village and is reached by crossing a road, then following gravel and grass paths that can be slippery when wet, so wear sturdy shoes. There is no shelter on site in bad weather.
