About Trevithick Cottage

Trevithick Cottage in Penponds, on the edge of Camborne, was the home of Richard Trevithick, the Cornish engineer and inventor famous for his work on steam power. Now cared for by the National Trust, it is an 18th century former farmhouse with whitewashed walls and a thatched roof, Grade II star listed, with a bronze plaque on the gable recording that Trevithick lived here. Inside, the front parlour has full wood panelling and a decorated fireplace, and there is a small garden. The cottage opens one afternoon a week for tours, which must be booked in advance through the National Trust, and entry is free to all visitors. Parking is limited to two off road spaces at the front. There are steps and uneven surfaces, and the cottage is not suitable for wheelchairs; only assistance dogs are allowed. It is managed alongside the National Trust's East Pool Mine at Pool, where Cornish beam engines can be seen, so the two make a natural pairing for anyone interested in Cornwall's industrial history.
