About Kennall Vale Nature Reserve

Kennall Vale Nature Reserve is a Cornwall Wildlife Trust reserve in a wooded valley above Ponsanooth, a village inland in the Penryn area on the A393 between Redruth and Penryn.

What you will find in the valley

The reserve covers eight hectares and takes in the site of the Kennall Vale gunpowder works, which closed in the first decade of the 20th century. The ruined mill buildings now stand among mature woodland, open glades and rich undergrowth beside the Kennall river, and there is a flooded quarry too. A permissive footpath loops around the reserve. The woods suit walkers, photographers and anyone curious about Cornwall’s industrial history, and Burncoose Gardens is a short way off if you want another stop on the same day.

Before you set out

The ground can be muddy and awkward in places, so sturdy footwear makes the walk easier. Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times. The narrow lanes leading to the reserve need care, and because there is no car park you should park in Ponsanooth village and walk up rather than leave the car on the lane, which must stay clear for farm, delivery and emergency vehicles.

Timing your visit

The reserve suffers overcrowding, which harms wildlife, visitors and the local community, so please avoid visiting at the weekends and choose a quieter time. The village itself is known for the gunpowder works and the Ponsanooth railway viaduct, and buses run through it between Truro and Penryn and between Falmouth and Redruth, which helps if you are planning the day without a car.
