Porthleven Sands is a sandy beach on the Cornish coast, close to Porthleven. It is a designated Environment Agency bathing water, currently rated Excellent.

On-site you'll find parking, public toilets, a café or refreshments and seasonal RNLI lifeguard cover. Facilities can be seasonal, so bring what you need out of summer, and take litter home.

A first visit works well with time on the sand, then Porthleven for food, a walk, or the next cove along the coast.

Frequently asked questions about Porthleven Sands

Is Porthleven beach safe for swimming?

RNLI lifeguards patrol Porthleven beach in the summer holidays, so swim between the red and yellow flags when they are flying. Visit Cornwall advises against swimming along this stretch of coast, and the reef break is for experienced surfers only. Swimming at Loe Bar is not allowed at any time.

Are dogs allowed on Porthleven beach?

Dogs are not allowed on Porthleven West beach from 1 July to 31 August, between 10am and 6pm. Outside those times they are welcome. Dogs are also welcome on Loe Bar and around the National Trust's Penrose estate, but keep them on a short lead near livestock.

Where is the Ship Inn in Porthleven?

The Ship Inn is on Mount Pleasant Road, above the south west corner of the harbour, with views over the harbour and out to sea. It dates from around 1805 and is Grade II listed. It is reached by steep stone steps, serves food and is dog friendly.

Where can I park in Porthleven?

Parking in the town centre is limited. Cornwall Council runs Kittos Field long stay car park and Highburrow free car park. Highburrow also gives walking access to the Penrose estate and Loe Bar.

Can you walk from Porthleven to Loe Bar?

Yes. At low tide you can walk about three miles east along the shore, and the South West Coast Path also crosses Loe Bar. Loe Bar is a shingle bank that holds back Loe Pool, part of the National Trust's Penrose estate. Do not swim or enter the water there.

Are there holiday cottages in Porthleven?

Yes, there are holiday cottages and flats to rent in and around Porthleven. Book early for the main season and the food festival. Check parking with your host, as town centre parking is limited.
