About Wheal Peevor

Wheal Peevor is a former tin mine near the hamlet of Radnor, about a mile north east of Redruth, where three Grade II listed engine houses stand close together as a striking reminder of Cornwall's mining past. The mine was being worked for copper by about 1790, produced more than 3,000 tons of black tin between 1872 and 1889, and was reopened for wolfram in 1912 and 1938. In a restoration project completed in 2008, just over five hectares of derelict mining land were made safe, including twelve mineshafts, and the site is now a Scheduled Monument. Tracks lead around the engine houses with interpretation panels at points of interest, and the site links into the Coast to Coast Trail and Wheal Rose, so it suits walkers and cyclists. Entry is free at all times. Some sections are steep, while others are suitable for wheelchairs and buggies. A downloadable activity trail for children is available from Cornwall Council. The nearest public transport is in Redruth town centre, about a mile away.
