About Ballowall Barrow

Ballowall Barrow, also known as Carn Gloose, is a large and unusual Bronze Age burial monument on the cliffs about a mile west of St Just. It has a long and complicated history as a sacred site, and much of what you see today is the result of excavation and remodelling by the Cornish antiquarian Borlase in 1878, which left a striking complex of stone walls and chambers. The setting above the Atlantic is dramatic, and the barrow sits about 20 metres above the South West Coast Path, so it is easy to include on a clifftop walk. It is in the care of English Heritage, managed by the National Trust, and free to visit at any reasonable time in daylight. From the centre of St Just follow Cape Cornwall Street and take the left turn signed to Carn Gloose; the barrow is beside Carn Gloose Road, with a very small layby opposite. Please keep off the wall tops and out of the barrow because of loose masonry. Toilets, shops, cafés and pubs are in St Just, about a mile away.
