Village profile
Overview
Lanner is a village in west Cornwall, located about two miles southeast of Redruth. The name derives from the Cornish lannergh, meaning a clearing. The village is a former tin and copper mining parish that grew rapidly in the 19th century during the mining boom. The landscape is shaped by this industrial past, with former engine houses, quarries, and the prominent Carn Marth hill to the north. Lanner retains a strong sense of community and Cornish identity, with Methodism playing a central role in the village's social fabric.
History: Lanner has been recorded since 1542, with settlement traces dating back to the Bronze Age. The village was historically part of Gwennap parish until it was constituted as an independent parish in 1844 to accommodate its rapidly growing population. Lanner was a significant center for tin and copper mining, most notably for Tresavean Mine, which was one of the most productive copper mines in Cornwall and the third largest in the region. In 1842, Michael Loam installed the first man engine at Tresavean, a major technological advancement that allowed miners to descend the 1,728-foot shaft mechanically rather than by ladder. The village supported six Methodist chapels in the 19th century, reflecting the strong religious character of the mining community. The parish church, Christ Church, was consecrated in 1845 and became a rectory in 1867. Carn Marth hill contains many areas of interest, including a former granite quarry now used as an open-air theatre and a well-preserved engine house from Pennance Consols. Following the decline of mining in the late 19th century, Lanner evolved into a residential area, though it retains a strong connection to its Cornish mining heritage.
