A harbour built for shelter, fishing and community
Mousehole Harbour Authority traces the village’s protective quay to the late fourteenth century. The present harbour combines much older masonry with major nineteenth century works, including the north quay designed by lighthouse engineer Sir James Douglass.
Fishing and pilchard curing sustained generations of families. The harbour still works today, while the village also carries the memory of the eight Solomon Browne lifeboat crew and eight people aboard the Union Star who died in the Penlee disaster on 19 December 1981.
