Mousehole at a glance
A close knit harbour village shaped by fishing and the sea
Mousehole sits around a small harbour on the western side of Mount’s Bay. Granite cottages and narrow lanes rise behind the quays, while the harbour wall opens long views towards St Michael’s Mount and the bay.
The village grew around fishing and pilchard processing. Its harbour authority records a protective pier here by the late fourteenth century, with the present north quay and extended south quay taking shape in the nineteenth century.
Today the harbour remains the centre of the visit. A few unhurried hours can combine the quays, lanes, galleries and food; a full day leaves time for the coast path, Penlee memories and a longer look at the village’s maritime story.

The harbour is small enough to understand on foot, but its quays, working surfaces and sea conditions deserve time and care.
The defining landmark
A harbour built for shelter, fishing and community
Mousehole Harbour Authority traces the village’s protective quay to the late fourteenth century. The present harbour combines much older masonry with major nineteenth century works, including the north quay designed by lighthouse engineer Sir James Douglass.
Fishing and pilchard curing sustained generations of families. The harbour still works today, while the village also carries the memory of the eight Solomon Browne lifeboat crew and eight people aboard the Union Star who died in the Penlee disaster on 19 December 1981.

Follow a manageable out-and-back section west, turning back early enough for the conditions and your pace.
