St Blazey: the old river crossing town between Par and the Eden Project, by the Luxulyan Valley

St Blazey is a small town and civil parish in mid Cornwall, 3 miles east of St Austell and 1 mile north of Par. The parish's legal name is St Blaise, and its town council meets at Alexander Hall on Middleway. The western part of the built up area is known as St Blazey Gate.

The town is named after Saint Blaise, a 3rd or 4th century martyr from Lesser Armenia. A procession and service are held on his feast day, 3 February. The church of St Blaise was built between 1440 and 1445, replacing an earlier church mentioned in 1294.

Until the 16th century the valley below the town was the estuary of the River Par, and St Blazey was the lowest crossing point. Tin mining upstream silted it up, and it was marshland by the early 19th century. Joseph Treffry built the Par Canal between 1829 and 1835, and the town later became an engineering centre for mining and the railways.

The Eden Project lies in a former quarry within the parish, about 1.5 miles from the town centre. The Luxulyan Valley, part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site, runs north west from the edge of the town towards Luxulyan and the Treffry Viaduct.

The parish also includes Par Harbour and a short stretch of coast on St Austell Bay. The nearest railway station is Par, which serves St Blazey, Par and Tywardreath.
