Village profile
Overview
Luxulyan is a granite village on the southern edge of Bodmin Moor, surrounded by woodland, former quarries, and the monumental ruins of 19th-century industrial infrastructure. The village has a distinctive, slightly faded grandeur, shaped by its history as a granite centre and the presence of the Treffry Viaduct, a towering aqueduct and mineral tramway that once served the china clay and mining industries. The landscape is layered: ancient field systems, industrial relics, and regenerating woodland. Luxulyan feels like a place shaped by work.
History: Luxulyan's origins lie in the early medieval period, with its name possibly deriving from a Cornish saint, Sulien. The parish church, St Sulien and St Cyricus, dates from the 15th century but stands on an earlier site. Luxulyan was historically agricultural, but from the 18th century onward, granite quarrying became central to its economy. The village's granite was prized for its quality and was used in major engineering projects, including the British Museum and London Bridge. In the 1840s, Joseph Treffry, a local entrepreneur, built the Luxulyan Viaduct and associated tramway to transport china clay and copper ore from the moorland mines to the port at Par. This infrastructure transformed the village, bringing employment and a degree of prosperity. The viaduct, which rises 90 feet and carries a watercourse on its upper level, is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The decline of mining and quarrying in the 20th century left Luxulyan quieter, but the village retains its industrial heritage and continues to function as a small rural community.
