About St Nicholas and St Faith’s Church

St Nicholas and St Faith is Saltash's Grade I listed parish church, standing at the top of the old town near Alexandra Square and Station Road, above the steep streets that drop to the Tamar waterfront. It began as a Norman building, and Norman work survives in the north tower and in a blocked Norman south door; the church was remodelled in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, when the Perpendicular and intersecting tracery windows were added, and a large gabled fifteenth century chapel stands on the south side. The gabled south porch has a doorway with carved spandrels and a niche above that probably predates 1558, with a holy water stoup inside. The interior is covered by double plastered wagon roofs, and the square Norman font is said to have been brought from Wedgeworthy Farm. The walls are rubble stone under slate roofs, giving the building a plain, sturdy look that fits its origins as a chapel serving the castle and borough. It remains a working Church of England church, so access depends on services and events, and a visit takes around twenty minutes. It suits anyone following Saltash's heritage trail or combining the old town with a walk down to the waterside beneath the two Tamar bridges.
