About St Piran’s Oratory

St Piran’s Oratory is the excavated shell of an early chapel in the dunes of Penhale Sands, north east of Perranporth, linked to St Piran, patron saint of Cornwall. Legend places the saint here in the 6th century; modern analysis suggests the surviving building is medieval. Uncovered in 1835, reburied in 1980 and excavated again in 2014, it has a stone altar, stone benches and a doorway, and is protected by a concrete retaining wall. The gate is usually locked, so you view it from outside. It lies about 350 metres west of St Piran’s Cross and the ruins of the later church. Access is on foot across soft dunes with no firm paths, a walk of 20 to 30 minutes, so it is not suitable for wheelchairs or buggies. There are no facilities; the nearest are in Perranporth. Keep dogs on leads and do not climb on the walls.
