About King Doniert’s Stone

King Doniert's Stone is a pair of richly carved stone fragments from a 9th century cross, standing beside the road near Redgate on the southern edge of Bodmin Moor, west of St Cleer. One stone carries an inscription commemorating Doniert, usually identified with Dungarth, a king of Dumnonia in south west Britain who drowned in about AD 875. The second piece, sometimes known as the Other Half Stone, stands alongside it. Together they are among the most important early medieval carved stones in Cornwall and a rare link to its Dark Age kings. The site is in the care of English Heritage and is free to visit at any reasonable time in daylight. There is a small layby immediately next to the stones, so a stop takes only a few minutes. It is close to Trethevy Quoit and the Hurlers stone circles at Minions, so it is easy to build a short tour of the ancient sites around St Cleer. There are no facilities at the site itself.
