About Tintagel Old Post Office

Tintagel Old Post Office is a small medieval stone house on Fore Street in the centre of Tintagel, cared for by the National Trust. Built to the plan of a medieval manor house in the Cornish longhouse style, it has a famously uneven slate roof and has been altered over some six centuries. The name comes from the Victorian period, when one room served as the district letter office, and that post room is shown as it would have looked in the 1870s. Inside you can also see a large 16th century fireplace, a sleeping platform with medieval origins, needlework samplers and Victorian bedspreads, and outside there is a cottage garden where picnics are welcome. It was one of the National Trust's earliest acquisitions, bought in 1903 after local artists raised funds to save it. A visit takes under an hour, so it pairs easily with Tintagel Castle and the coast nearby. There is no parking at the house; use the pay and display car parks on Fore Street. The house closes in the winter months, so check opening days before travelling.
