About Cromwell’s Castle

Cromwell’s Castle is a tall round gun tower on a rocky point just north of New Grimsby harbour on Tresco, looking over the channel between Tresco and Bryher. Parliamentarian forces built it after taking the Royalist Isles of Scilly in 1651. Entry is free and the site is in English Heritage care, open at any reasonable time in daylight. Steep stone steps lead up through the tower. You reach it only on foot, along a path across heather covered hillside, so sturdy footwear helps, and dogs on leads are welcome. An audio tour is available, and both castles can be combined with the Old Blockhouse on a six mile circular coastal walk around Tresco.
