About Tresco Abbey Garden

Tresco Abbey Garden is a subtropical garden on the island of Tresco in the Isles of Scilly, where plants from every Mediterranean climate zone grow outdoors. Augustus Smith founded the garden in the 19th century around the ruins of a Benedictine Abbey, and it now holds a sanctuary of over 2,000 exotic species from the southern hemisphere and subtropics.

What you will see

Because the garden shelters so many southern hemisphere plants, around 300 species remain in bloom in midwinter. Red squirrels and golden pheasants roam freely among the beds. Within the garden, the Valhalla Figurehead Museum displays Scilly’s maritime history through its collection of figureheads.

Planning your visit

The garden opens 10am to 4pm daily, with last entry at 3:15pm. Tresco is car free and reached by boat or helicopter from Penzance, so most visitors arrive on foot. After the garden, a walk to Pentle Bay adds a beach to the day. The garden suits anyone curious about plants that thrive far from home.
